Urgent Shrimp Recall: Radioactive Contamination Concerns!
A major recall has been issued for several frozen shrimp products sold nationwide due to potential contamination with Cesium-137 (Cs-137), a radioactive isotope. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is urging consumers to check their freezers immediately.
AquaStar (USA) Corp initiated a recall on September 19, 2025, affecting approximately 49,920 bags of Kroger Raw Colossal EZ Peel Shrimp, 18,000 bags of Kroger Mercado Cooked Medium Peeled Tail-Off Shrimp, and 17,264 bags of AquaStar Raw Peeled Tail-on Shrimp Skewers. The FDA expanded the warning on September 23, with companies like Southwind Foods LLC and Lawrence Wholesale LLC adding to the list.
Which Products Are Affected?
The recalled shrimp was sold at major retailers, including Baker’s, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Foodsco, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Gerbes, Jay C, King Soopers, Kroger, Mariano’s, Metro Market, Pay Less Supermarkets, Pick ‘n Save, Ralphs, Smith’s and QFC in multiple states between June 12, 2025 and September 17, 2025. Southwind Foods products may be branded as Sand Bar, Arctic Shores, Best Yet, Great American or First Street.

Why is Cesium-137 a Concern?
Cs-137 is a man-made radioisotope. Long-term, repeated exposure to low doses of Cs-137, such as through contaminated food or water, can elevate the risk of cancer due to DNA damage within living cells.
What Should You Do?
Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled shrimp products are advised to discard them immediately or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Contact your doctor if you think you may have been exposed.
