Los Angeles Dodgers closer Tanner Scott is adopting a new, aggressive mindset to overcome his struggles in the 2025 season. After signing a four-year, $72 million contract with the Dodgers following an impressive 2024 season (1.75 ERA across 72 games with the Padres and Marlins), Scott hasn't quite lived up to expectations.
His current ERA stands at 4.64, and his nine blown saves this season surpass his combined total from the previous two years. This performance has led to significant disappointment, especially given the Dodgers' high hopes for the season and the presence of stars like Shohei Ohtani.
However, Scott has recently revealed a two-word mantra that seems to be turning things around. "Well, I kind of just have the (to heck with it) attitude right now," Scott said. "I don’t know. I’m just trying to go out there right now and not think. Just say, ‘(Screw) it.’ I mean, that’s how I always pitched. I kind of lost it this year. Now I’m back to ‘(Screw) it.’"
Since adopting this approach, Scott's performance has shown improvement. In his last four games against the San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies, he hasn't allowed a single run. He's thrown two scoreless innings in relief and lowered his season ERA from 5.01 to 4.64.
This resurgence comes at a crucial time for the Dodgers, whose bullpen needs a boost before the postseason. A confident and effective Scott could provide the team with an All-Star caliber player in the bullpen, a significant asset for their playoff aspirations. With their postseason spot secured and needing only three more wins to clinch the NL West title for the fourth consecutive year, the Dodgers are hoping Scott's new mindset will solidify their chances for a deep playoff run.
The Dodgers' success hinges on Scott's ability to maintain this newfound focus and deliver consistent performances in high-pressure situations. Will this simple mantra be the key to unlocking his potential and helping the Dodgers achieve their championship goals?
