Dodgers' Bullpen Crisis: Star Reliever Sidelined! Who's Next Up?

The Los Angeles Dodgers are facing a major challenge as they head into October: their bullpen. Already struggling, the Dodgers' pitching staff has been dealt another blow with Michael Kopech landing on the injured list. Manager Dave Roberts confirmed the news, revealing that Kopech is battling multiple issues that have impacted his performance and consistency.

Kopech himself expressed his frustration, saying, "I’m working through some stuff just as everyone is at this time of year. It’s a couple different things right now. It’s very frustrating. It’s a special group. I care for these guys." Despite a respectable 2.45 ERA across 11 innings this season, this marks Kopech's third stint on the injured list. He began the season sidelined with a shoulder injury and later suffered a torn meniscus after only eight appearances.

Roberts had hinted at the possibility of this roster move, mentioning that Kopech was potentially "banged up." The exact nature of the injury remained unclear initially, with Kopech suggesting it could be related to his shoulder, elbow, or even his recent knee surgery. "It might be a shoulder. It might be an elbow," Kopech said. "He's obviously coming off knee surgery. Certainly it’s pitchable. Those are his words.”

In a corresponding move, Will Klein has been called up to fill Kopech's spot. Klein, who has a 3.38 ERA in 10.2 innings pitched with the Dodgers this season, was spotted with a locker in the Dodgers' clubhouse earlier Friday. While he hasn't appeared in a major league game for LA since late July, the right-hander will aim to provide much-needed support to the struggling bullpen.

Kopech quickly became a vital asset in the Dodgers' bullpen after being acquired in a three-team trade involving the Dodgers, White Sox, and St. Louis Cardinals at last year's trade deadline. His absence will undoubtedly be felt as the Dodgers navigate the remainder of the regular season and prepare for the playoffs. The team hopes Klein can step up and contribute during this critical time.
