Purdue's Popularity Soars! Record Apps, Selective Class of 2025!

Purdue University is experiencing unprecedented demand, with a record-breaking 86,953 applications received for the incoming fall 2025 undergraduate class. This marks the 14th consecutive year of record applications, solidifying Purdue's position as a highly sought-after institution.

Record Applications Across All Levels

The surge in applications isn't limited to undergraduate programs. Purdue has also seen record numbers of applicants for its master's and doctoral programs. New PhD applicants jumped by 17% to a record 11,468, and master’s applicants reached an all-time high of 12,717. This widespread interest reflects the university's growing reputation for academic excellence across all disciplines.

Most Selective Class in History

The high volume of applications has led to Purdue's most selective incoming class in recent history. While the in-state undergraduate admissions rate remained relatively stable at 71%, the out-of-state admissions rate dropped to 39%. This increased selectivity is also reflected in the academic profile of the incoming class. The average SAT score and GPA have reached new records, at 1,337 and 3.81, respectively, with 97% of admitted students submitting standardized test scores. Purdue is by far the most selective public university in the state.

Factors Influencing Enrollment

Despite the record application numbers, Purdue reported a slightly smaller freshman class for fall 2025. This decision was made in response to an unexpected increase in the yield rate during the summer of 2024. Additionally, some international students chose to postpone their enrollment due to visa delays. The university welcomed 8,914 new undergraduates to the West Lafayette campus in August, a decrease from the previous year's record enrollment of 10,628.

Student Success on the Rise

Purdue's commitment to student success is evident in its impressive graduation rates. The four- and six-year graduation rates have reached all-time highs of 68.3% and 84.6%, respectively. Furthermore, the average time-to-degree has decreased to a record low of 3.84 years. These metrics highlight Purdue's dedication to providing students with the resources and support they need to thrive academically and graduate on time.

Looking Ahead

Purdue is actively preparing to accommodate its growing student population. New student housing is scheduled to open this summer and next, ensuring that the university can welcome a larger and academically well-prepared class to campus. Provost Patrick Wolfe expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Once again, a record number of students want to join us in West Lafayette and Indianapolis, and we couldn’t be more thrilled."
