Dodgers' Playoff Hopes Dented? Will Smith Injury Update!

Dodgers Face Catcher Crisis Ahead of Postseason

The Los Angeles Dodgers are navigating a challenging situation as the postseason approaches, with both of their primary catchers sidelined by injuries. The team's All-Star catcher, Will Smith, is currently on the 15-day injured list after being struck in the hand by a foul ball on September 3rd. This injury opened the door for rookie Dalton Rushing, who also landed on the injured list with a right shin contusion earlier this month.

Before the injury, Smith was working to bounce back from a disappointing August. His season batting average dipped from .325 to .297 at the start of September.

Ben Rortvedt Steps Up

In the absence of Smith and Rushing, Ben Rortvedt has seen increased playing time in September. He's been performing well at the plate, batting .286 with two home runs in 28 at-bats this month. While Rortvedt has provided a reliable option, the Dodgers are eager to have their All-Star catcher back behind the plate for the playoffs.

Smith's Recovery Stalled

Unfortunately, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has indicated that Smith's recovery is progressing slowly. Roberts stated that Smith will not face live pitching until next week, as the team is prioritizing giving him ample time to prepare for the postseason. It's likely that Smith will be playing through some level of pain once the playoffs begin.

"There might be some one-handed swings. I don’t know if he’s going to be using his top hand,” Roberts told reporters. “As far as the throwing, I’m not sure about that. It’s kind of a day-to-day thing with that.”

The earliest Smith could return is this Saturday against the San Francisco Giants. However, based on Roberts' comments, it seems likely that Smith's time on the injured list will extend beyond the minimum 15 days. The Dodgers are closely monitoring the situation and hoping for a swift recovery for their star catcher.
