The Cincinnati Bengals are bolstering their quarterback depth after Joe Burrow suffered a turf toe injury that will sideline him for at least three months. The team has signed both Mike White and Sean Clifford to their practice squad.
Bengals QB Room Shakeup
ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported the news. The Bengals, initially planning to add one quarterback, ultimately signed two players they highly valued. While Jake Browning is slated to start, the additions of White and Clifford provide crucial depth and experience. Bengals head coach Zac Taylor expressed confidence in Browning, stating, "I feel very confident in Jake. Jake has proven his caliber in this league and he can help us win football games and contend for all the things we want to contend for."
Sean Clifford's Homecoming
Sean Clifford, a former Green Bay Packers draft pick (149th overall in 2023), finds a new opportunity close to home. Clifford played high school football at St. Xavier in Cincinnati, making this signing a homecoming. He served as Jordan Love's primary backup in 2023 before transitioning to a practice squad role in 2024. Although he spent the summer in Green Bay, he was released during roster cutdowns.
Mike White's Chance
Mike White brings NFL starting experience to the Bengals. He previously played for the New York Jets, where he had a memorable performance against the Bengals in 2021, throwing for 405 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-31 victory. White has appeared in 15 career games and holds a 2-5 record as a starter. He was most recently in training camp with the Buffalo Bills.
What's Next for the Bengals?
With Burrow sidelined, the Bengals' quarterback room now consists of Jake Browning, Brett Rypien (practice squad), Mike White (practice squad), and Sean Clifford. The team will be closely evaluating their options as they navigate Burrow's absence. It's conceivable that Clifford could be in the mix to start against the Packers in Week 6.
- Jake Browning is the likely starter.
- Mike White brings starting experience.
- Sean Clifford gets a chance near his hometown.
