Oregon Coast Shaken! 5.8 Quake & Aftershocks Rock Pacific!

Oregon Coast Hit by Earthquake Swarm!

The Oregon coast experienced a flurry of seismic activity starting Monday night, with a significant 5.8 magnitude earthquake striking approximately 100 miles offshore near Port Orford. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the initial quake occurred shortly after 9 p.m., followed by a series of aftershocks.

Thankfully, officials have confirmed that the earthquakes are not expected to generate a tsunami, posing no immediate threat to coastal communities. However, the repeated tremors have raised awareness of the region's seismic activity.

Earthquake Timeline:

  • 5.8 Magnitude: Reported at 9:08 p.m. Monday night, 102.3 miles off Port Orford.
  • 4.4 Magnitude: Reported at 9:15 p.m. Monday night, 108.3 miles off Port Orford.
  • 2.7 Magnitude: Reported at 9:32 p.m. Monday night, 103 miles off Gold Beach.
  • 3.3 Magnitude: Reported at 9:38 p.m. Monday night, 107 miles off Port Orford.
  • 4.9 Magnitude: Reported at 10:59 p.m. Monday night, 103.9 miles off Port Orford.
  • 3.1 Magnitude: Reported at 1:05 a.m. Tuesday, 107 miles off Port Orford.
  • 4.3 Magnitude: Reported at 4:47 a.m. Tuesday, 114.3 miles off Port Orford.

Adding to the seismic activity, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake was reported further offshore on Tuesday afternoon, approximately 170 miles west of Grants Pass. This event, like the others, did not trigger a tsunami warning.

Earthquakes are relatively common occurrences off the coasts of Oregon, Washington, and California, due to their location along the active tectonic plate boundaries of the Pacific Ocean. While these recent quakes haven't caused any reported damage or injuries, they serve as a reminder of the region's vulnerability to seismic events. Globally, seismic activity has been moderate, with numerous smaller quakes detected worldwide. As of September 12, 2025, there have been seven earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 or greater and a total of 568 earthquakes above magnitude 2.0 in the past 24 hours.

Stay tuned for further updates as this developing story unfolds.
