The Philadelphia Eagles are making moves after their Week 1 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. While the win was sweet, a rib injury to backup running back Will Shipley has prompted the team to bring back a familiar face to their practice squad.
Shipley's Injury Opens Door for Johnson
Shipley, a second-year player out of Clemson, showed promise early in the game against Dallas before being sidelined with the injury. The severity of the injury is still unknown, but the Eagles are taking precautions by re-signing running back Montrell Johnson Jr. to the practice squad. Johnson spent training camp with the team and impressed with his preseason performances.
In two preseason games, Johnson rushed for 77 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. He also contributed on special teams with two kick returns for 47 yards. His familiarity with the Eagles' system makes him a logical choice to fill the void left by Shipley's injury.
Eagles Deepen Roster Amidst Other Transactions
The Eagles also signed OLB Patrick Johnson to their 53-man roster from the practice squad. In other moves, they signed OL Hollin Pierce to the practice squad and released WR Elijah Cooks. The team had previously waived guard Kenyon Green, creating a spot for Patrick Johnson.
Patrick Johnson played 12 snaps on defense and 17 on special teams in Week 1. With Ben VanSumeren out for the season, Johnson is expected to have a significant role on special teams.
What's Next for the Eagles?
The Eagles now have seven edge rushers on their 53-man roster. It remains to be seen if some players like Azeez Ojulari, or Ogbo Okoronkwo will remain on the team. Veteran safety Marcus Epps, recently released by the Patriots, has landed on Philadelphia’s practice squad and was elevated for the game against the Cowboys.
For now, all eyes are on Shipley’s recovery. If he is sidelined for an extended period, the Eagles may need to address the running back position more seriously. A.J. Dillon's performance in Week 1 did not inspire much confidence, making Johnson's return a welcome sight for Eagles fans.
