Don Shula, a name synonymous with NFL success, led the Miami Dolphins for 26 years, securing two Super Bowl victories. His 1972 team achieved the impossible: a perfect season, a feat unmatched in NFL history. Even 30 years after his retirement, Don remains the winningest coach in league history. Mike had the unique opportunity to work alongside his father during the 1991 and 92 seasons, gaining invaluable insights into the game.
"My dad was awesome for so many reasons," Mike shared. "He just had such great perspective and talked about always moving forward and learning from the past. You can't change the past, but you can be better because of it." This philosophy of continuous improvement has been a cornerstone of Mike's coaching approach.

When asked about his father's approach leading up to a season opener, Mike emphasized the importance of surrounding yourself with good people and having confidence in your preparation. "Surround yourself with good people and be confident in what you're doing, because of the way you've prepared," Mike said. "And just kind of keep believing in yourself and those guys around you. You've got to handle the ups and downs and be the same guy every day."
Mentors and Influences
Mike's coaching career began in 1988 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also learned from Ray Perkins, who coached him at Alabama and significantly influenced his offensive philosophy. After working with his father, Mike spent three seasons in Chicago, where he learned from offensive coordinator Ron Turner.
