Labor Day Weekend Weather Alert: Tampa Braces for Rain & Coastal Risks!

Heads up, Tampa Bay! Your Labor Day weekend plans might need a slight adjustment. While Saturday saw mostly clear skies, Sunday and Monday bring an increased chance of rain and thunderstorms across Southwest Florida.

Tampa Weather Forecast: What to Expect

Models indicate a higher probability of showers due to a prominent westerly flow and increased moisture. The entire region faces a level 1 (out of 4) risk of excessive rainfall, meaning some storms could be heavy. Expect increased cloud cover throughout Sunday.

Labor Day (Monday) Outlook

There's good news! Rain chances have decreased slightly for Labor Day itself, potentially allowing for some sunshine. However, spotty storms remain possible, so be prepared with an indoor backup plan. High temperatures will reach the low 90s.

The upcoming week will continue the typical rainy season pattern, with scattered showers, a mix of clouds and sun, and highs in the low 90s.

Beach and Boating Conditions

The westerly flow and higher chance of storms will create gusty conditions on the water. Winds are expected from the west at 5 to 15 knots, with higher gusts. Small craft should exercise caution. Gulf wave heights are reaching 1 to 2 feet, with a light chop in bays and inland waters. Keep a close eye on the sky for developing storms.

Tropical Activity

A tropical wave is expected to emerge off the coast of Africa soon, with a low (30%) chance of development over the next 7 days. Environmental conditions could support slow development as it moves west across the Atlantic. Current models suggest it will stay far away from Florida.

Coastal Concerns Across the Southeast

Beyond Tampa, a broader weather pattern is impacting the South and Central U.S. through Labor Day weekend. Downpours are expected from Wyoming to New Mexico and from Texas to Florida and the Carolinas, with flash flooding as the primary concern.

Stronger thunderstorms could spawn waterspouts, posing hazards for coastal waters and beachgoers. Expect rough surf and strong rip currents from Florida to the Carolinas, potentially expanding north to Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey.

Stay safe and have a happy Labor Day weekend!
