Jobourg Trail Closure After Devastating Wildfires
Following the wildfires that ravaged the Nez de Jobourg area on August 24th and 25th, 2025, authorities have announced the closure of a section of the GR223 hiking trail (Sentier des Douaniers) in La Hague. The affected area stretches between Anse de Gravette and Nez de Voidries and will remain closed until September 30th, 2025.
The decision to close the trail was made due to the instability caused by the large volume of water used to extinguish the fires. The ground has been weakened, and there is a risk of falling rocks and mudslides, especially with anticipated rainfall.
Detour Information
Hikers are advised to use the alternative route via the "Montcaneval" communal path and the RD 202. Signage has been put in place to guide users along the detour.
Human Negligence Suspected as Cause
An investigation into the cause of the wildfires is underway. Preliminary findings suggest that human negligence, possibly a discarded cigarette butt, may be responsible for the blaze that consumed approximately 8 hectares of land. The prosecutor of Cherbourg has stated that the human negligence is the leading hypothesis.
Authorities are urging the public to exercise extreme caution and be mindful of fire hazards, especially during dry conditions. A seemingly small act of carelessness can have devastating consequences for the environment.
- Avoid discarding cigarettes in natural areas.
- Be aware of weather conditions and fire danger levels.
- Report any signs of fire immediately.
Continued Vigilance
While the fires have been contained, authorities are maintaining vigilance and monitoring the area for any potential flare-ups. The public is encouraged to stay informed and heed all safety warnings.
