The Minnesota Vikings have added veteran safety K'Von Wallace to their practice squad amidst uncertainty surrounding Harrison Smith's health. Smith, a key player for the Vikings, is currently dealing with a personal health matter, leaving his status for the September 8th season opener against the Chicago Bears in question.
Wallace, a 28-year-old former fourth-round pick by the Eagles in 2020, brings valuable experience to the safety room. He has played in 71 games across four teams, providing depth and versatility. Wallace joins Kahlef Hailassie, another recent addition to the practice squad, bolstering the Vikings' options at safety.
The Vikings' current depth chart at safety, alongside Smith, includes Josh Metellus, Theo Jackson, and Jay Ward. It remains to be seen whether Wallace or Hailassie will be elevated from the practice squad and see game action during the regular season.
Wallace's NFL Journey
Wallace spent three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles before splitting time between the Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans in 2023. Last season, he played nine games with the Seattle Seahawks. His most productive season came in 2023, where he started 12 games and recorded career-highs with two interceptions and 89 tackles while playing for Arizona and Tennessee.
Unfortunately, Wallace's 2024 season was cut short due to a season-ending ankle injury suffered in November. He became a free agent in March and briefly signed with the New York Giants before being released prior to the roster deadline.
Harrison Smith's Health: What We Know
According to ESPN's Kevin Seifert, Harrison Smith is currently sidelined due to a "personal health issue." Ben Goessling of the Star Tribune clarified that the issue is not related to mental health. Seifert reported on X that Smith, who last practiced on August 11, is expected to make a full recovery. The Vikings have not placed him on injured reserve, and he was named a 2025 captain, suggesting confidence in his eventual return. His condition will be evaluated weekly.
The Vikings are hoping for a swift recovery for Smith, but Wallace's addition provides crucial insurance as the season approaches.
