SEATTLE - Randy Arozarena's impressive home run wasn't enough to propel the Seattle Mariners to victory as they fell to the Oakland Athletics 2-1 in extra innings on Saturday night. The A's Shea Langeliers delivered the decisive blow with a two-out, tie-breaking double in the 10th inning.
The Athletics managed just five hits throughout the game, also scoring in the fourth inning when Darell Hernaiz singled, driving in Jacob Wilson. Arozarena, however, provided a spark for the Mariners in the sixth with a solo home run, his 24th of the season, marking a new career high. His previous best was 23 home runs back in 2023 with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Despite Arozarena's efforts, the Mariners' offense struggled to capitalize on opportunities. George Kirby pitched well for Seattle, but the lineup couldn't muster enough support. Seattle now sits three games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West standings but maintains a three-game lead over the Kansas City Royals for the final American League wild card spot.
Tyler Ferguson (3-2) earned the win for the Athletics, pitching 1 1/3 hitless innings. Hogan Harris secured his second save of the season, entering in the 10th with runners on base and managing to close out the game. Harris induced a fielder's choice from J.P. Crawford and walked Cole Young to load the bases before Arozarena grounded into a game-ending force out.
A total of five Athletics pitchers combined to limit the Mariners to just three hits. Jacob Wilson had two hits for the Athletics. Victor Robles, returning from the injured list, went 1-for-4.
The Mariners had a prime opportunity to score in the 10th inning, with a runner starting on second base. Jorge Polanco walked, and Victor Robles sacrificed him to third. After J.P. Crawford reached on an error and Cole Young walked to load the bases, Arozarena grounded out to end the game. The Mariners left too many runners on base, unable to string together enough hits to overcome the Athletics' pitching.
