Zach Calzada to Start at Quarterback for Kentucky Wildcats
In a highly anticipated announcement, the Kentucky Wildcats have named Zach Calzada as their starting quarterback for the upcoming season opener against Toledo. This decision, revealed by ESPN's Pete Thamel, comes after a competitive fall camp where Calzada narrowly edged out redshirt freshman Cutter Boley.
Calzada, a transfer from Incarnate Word and a seventh-year player, brings a wealth of experience to the Wildcats. Last season at Incarnate Word, he led the FCS in passing touchdowns with an impressive 35. He also boasted a 65.5% completion rate, throwing for 3,744 yards and only nine interceptions.
Throughout his six-year collegiate career, which includes stints at Incarnate Word, Auburn, and Texas A&M, Calzada has proven his ability to lead an offense. He has completed 62.7% of his passes for 8,660 yards and 73 touchdowns, while also adding 380 rushing yards and 11 scores on the ground.
Stoops Highlights Calzada's Experience
Head Coach Mark Stoops emphasized Calzada's experience during an appearance at the Greater Louisville UK Alumni 2025 Wildcat Kickoff Luncheon. "Zach Calzada is a transfer, he's a sixth-year player. I really like his experience. He's been around a long time. He's played in this league, he's won big games," Stoops stated. He further added, "He's a big guy, he can make all the throws, he has a strong arm."
However, Stoops also acknowledged the strong performance of Cutter Boley, indicating that the competition was tight. Boley's impressive scrimmage performance pushed him back into contention for the starting role. While Boley represents the future of the program, Calzada's experience and proven track record ultimately swayed the decision.
