Camilo Doval, acquired by the Yankees to bolster their bullpen as a setup man, is struggling to find his footing in the Bronx. Since arriving from the Giants on July 31st, the former closer has faced a difficult adjustment period, culminating in a shaky performance during Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Red Sox.
Entering the sixth inning with a 3-2 lead, Doval only managed to record one out, surrendering the tying run after allowing two hits and a walk. This marks his third consecutive appearance where he has allowed runs, and his fifth in nine games since joining the Yankees.
Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged Doval's potential, stating, "His stuff’s really good, obviously, just again it’s strike-throwing. That next level of strike-throwing that allows you to be really, really good, and really, really sharp out there. Just not quite as sharp as when he’s at his best.”
The Yankees' acquisition of Doval involved trading four minor league prospects to the Giants: pitchers Trystan Vrieling and Carlos de la Rosa, catcher Jesús Rodríguez, and infielder Parks Harber. The team also acquired David Bednar from the Pirates to further strengthen their bullpen. Bednar has been closing games recently, notching three saves for the Yankees.
Doval himself admits he's still adjusting to his new role. "Just adjusting to the role here now," Doval said through an interpreter after Thursday night’s loss. "Just getting ready earlier, preparing myself earlier to go into the game.”
While the Yankees invested heavily in their bullpen at the trade deadline, the performance of Doval raises questions. The pressure is on for Doval to find his form as the Yankees push towards the playoffs.
Adding to the Yankees' situation, Giancarlo Stanton's pinch-hitting prowess has been a surprising boon. His extra-inning home run in Tampa on Wednesday highlighted his improved performance in that role.
Looking ahead, the Yankees have a favorable schedule which could help them close the season strong, facing teams like the Twins, Orioles, and White Sox.
