Unveiling Marine Secrets: Aquatic Resources Malta's MEDITS Study

Aquatic Resources Malta is deeply involved in the annual MEDITS (Mediterranean International Trawl Survey), a collaborative effort across several Mediterranean countries. This vital research gathers data on fish stocks and the health of the marine ecosystem. According to Alicia Bugeja Said, Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights, the MEDITS initiative reflects the government's commitment to sustainable fishing and the Malta 2050 Vision for the maritime sector. The data collected informs decisions by the European Union and Maltese authorities regarding the sustainability of fisheries, ensuring a better future for fishers and future generations.

Francis Fabri, Chief Executive of Aquatic Resources Malta, highlighted that this Euro-Mediterranean research is part of broader studies the agency conducts. The agency utilizes a vessel equipped with advanced technologies, transforming it into a scientific laboratory to analyze species caught through trawling and gather crucial data.
