Tom Sandoval, once labeled "the most hated man in America" after the infamous "Scandoval," is attempting a career resurgence on 'America's Got Talent.' The Vanderpump Rules star and his cover band, Tom Sandoval & The Most Extras, wowed the judges with their energetic rendition of A-ha's "Take on Me," earning four yeses and a spot in the quarterfinals.
AGT a Chance for Redemption?
Sandoval told Entertainment Weekly that he feels things have changed since the scandal and that 'America's Got Talent' offers a chance for people to see him in a different light. He hopes viewers will see him doing what he loves and what makes him truly happy.
The judges were largely supportive. Sofia Vergara said the act "brought me joy," and Howie Mandel hailed Sandoval as "a showman." Even Simon Cowell, despite some vocal concerns and his friendship with Lisa Vanderpump, expressed disinterest in the past drama.
Facing the Music (and the Backlash)
Sandoval acknowledges the potential for backlash, telling Billboard he was initially nervous about competing. He recognizes the opportunity for both himself and the band is too great to ignore. “I was very, very nervous. I wasn’t sure I really wanted to do it. I thought, you know, I might be facing a lot of backlash online, and I just decided this is such a great opportunity for me … and for the band to be out there.”
What's Next for Sandoval?
Sandoval is teasing an even bigger and better live performance, promising it will be "more extra." Whether he can truly redeem himself in the eyes of the public remains to be seen, but 'America's Got Talent' provides a significant platform for him to try. The band advances to the next stage of NBC’s talent competition show.
