High School Football Star Shines! Unbelievable Debut Performance!

Kapolei Hurricanes running back Zeph Salis made a varsity debut to remember, leading his team to a decisive 46-21 victory over Punahou. The sophomore sensation rushed for an impressive 201 yards and three touchdowns on just 10 carries, averaging over 20 yards per rush. His electrifying performance at the Alvin Nagasako Sports Complex has quickly made him a player to watch this season.

A Natural Talent

Coach Darren Hernandez raved about Salis' natural talent and work ethic. "He just has a knack for finding a seam and exploding through the seam, and it's very difficult to coach that," Hernandez explained. "His work ethic is amazing, and he has a super attitude, but that next level of instinct – when you cut against the grain – that kind of stuff you can't coach it."

More Than Just Football

Salis' maturity extends beyond the football field. As the eldest boy in a household with 11 siblings, he carries significant responsibilities, making his on-field achievements even more remarkable. Despite being a backup to starting running back Chazz-Michael Kapahu (who also had a great game with 112 yards and a touchdown), Salis wasted no time making his presence felt. His very first carry resulted in a 42-yard touchdown, setting the tone for the night.

"After he did that I thought, ‘Man, we got something here,' " Hernandez shared, reflecting on Salis' immediate impact. Having transferred to Kapolei in January, Salis quickly integrated into the team and showcased his potential. Keep an eye on Zeph Salis – he's poised to make a significant impact this season.

In related news, the Sabers displayed a strong defensive performance, securing a victory against the Marauders in their JV/White girls VB match. Campbell also secured a win with David Vidinha leading the way with 96 yards. Brayden Medeiros contributed 174 yards and a touchdown, while Shaison Kupukaa added 118 yards and another touchdown. The Cane Knife Trophy will remain with WAIPAHU for at least another year.
