Justice Nana Barima Yaw Kodie Oppong, Director of Legal Education and head of the Ghana School of Law (GSL), will officially step down on Sunday, August 31, 2025. His departure marks an early end to his tenure at the helm of the nation's premier legal training institution.
In a message to students on Tuesday, August 12, Justice Oppong expressed gratitude to God for His guidance during his three years in office. He noted that while he had hoped to complete his full term and preside over the upcoming Call to the Bar ceremony, that was not to be.
"To our Part II students, it is my earnest prayer that every one of you will be called to the Bar this coming October. To our Part I students, may the Almighty God grant you success and guide you through to Part II," he said in a notice to the students. He also urged the student body to give greater respect, cooperation, and support to his successor.
Justice Oppong assumed office on April 1, 2022, following the retirement of Mr. Kwasi Prempeh-Eck. He is a former senior lecturer at the school, a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Ghana, and a Barrister-at-Law with over 22 years of practice. He specializes in Energy and Natural Resource Law, as well as Banking and Finance Law.

Justice Oppong has been credited with championing academic reform, strengthening administrative efficiency, and fostering discipline and excellence among students. His departure ahead of the 2025 Call to the Bar, one of the most important events in the Ghana School of Law calendar, has caused some surprise.

The Ghana Legal Council (GLC) is expected to announce his successor in the coming days. Justice Oppong's future plans remain undisclosed, but his contributions to legal education in Ghana are undeniable. He also serves as Mawerehene of Akyem Abuakwa.
