Accra, Ghana – The nation is in mourning following a tragic military helicopter crash in the Ashanti region that claimed the lives of eight people, including two government ministers. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, has been described as a "national tragedy" by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah.
Ministers Among the Deceased
Among the victims are Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment, Science and Technology Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed. The helicopter, a Z9 model, was carrying three crew members and five passengers when it crashed in a dense forest while en route from Accra to Obuasi for an event focused on combating illegal mining, commonly known as 'galamsey'. Sadly, there were no survivors.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has also expressed its deepest condolences to the President, Government of Ghana, and the families of all the victims. They specifically mourned the loss of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed (Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator), Dr. Samuel Sarpong (Vice Chairman of the NDC), and Mr. Samuel Aboagye (a former parliamentary candidate). The GFA also remembered the crew members: Squadron Leader Peter Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Ghanaian military has launched a formal inquiry to determine the circumstances that led to the tragic event. While authorities have not yet confirmed the cause, the Ghana Meteorological Agency had forecasted unusually cold weather for August, with recent rains and light showers creating foggy conditions in many forest areas. Local farmers near the crash site reported morning fog as the helicopter flew overhead.
One eyewitness told the BBC that the helicopter was flying at an "unusually low altitude" and the weather was poor. The eyewitness recalled hearing the helicopter pass by, followed by a "loud sound" and then a "bang", leading him to realize the helicopter had exploded.
Nation in Grief
The bodies of the deceased have been recovered and transported to Accra. A solemn ceremony was held at the Air Force Base to receive them. Plans for the burial of the Muslim victims have been postponed pending full identification of the bodies. The government is yet to announce the full funeral arrangements.
The Ghana Football Association, along with the entire nation, stands in solidarity with the bereaved families during this incredibly difficult time. The GFA acknowledged the dedication and service of all those who perished in the line of duty.
