Accra has experienced two separate fire incidents that have caused significant damage and displaced numerous residents. Authorities are currently investigating the causes of both fires.
Tourist Centre Fire
Around 1:00 a.m. on Monday, August 4th, a fire broke out at the Accra Tourist Information Centre. Early reports indicate that the fire might have started in the kitchen area of Rockz Waakye, a well-known food vendor on the premises.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded quickly, dispatching five fire tenders to control the blaze. Fortunately, no injuries or deaths were reported. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Madina Slum Fire
Earlier, on Sunday, August 3rd, a large fire swept through a cluster of wooden and metal structures near the Madina Redco Flats. The GNFS received an emergency call at 12:36 p.m., and the first fire engine arrived from the Madina Fire Station within minutes. Additional support from Legon, Abelempke, and GNFS Headquarters brought the total response to five fire engines.
Officials report that the fire, suspected to have originated at a washing bay, destroyed over 50 structures and metal containers, leaving several families homeless. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
The GNFS is urging residents to be vigilant, report any fire hazards immediately, and adhere to basic safety precautions, particularly in areas prone to fires. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
The GNFS is also appealing to the public to support the displaced families in Madina with essential items.
