Ghana government don release $1 million to clear part of the debt dem dey owe University of Memphis for scholarships. This news dey come as relief give Ghanaian students wey dey school for the US, because dem dey fear say dem go revoke demma scholarships, evict dem, and even deport dem.
Scholarship Secretariat Assures Students
The Registrar of the Scholarships Secretariat, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, talk say dem dey do everything possible to solve the problem. He talk say government already pay $400,000 to the university and dem dey process another $1 million payment. This go reduce the debt wey dey stand at $2.2 million.
“We dey on course with the issues wey dey concern Ghanaian students for University of Memphis. Ghanaian students no go deport; I dey give you that assurance,” Mr. Asafo-Agyei talk am.
Why the Delay?
The Registrar explain say the delay in full payment be because dem dey do audit. “Because the audit dey go on, we no dey pay all. We owe dem $3.6 million in total, and we don pay $400,000 so far. We dey process $1 million payment now,” he talk.
He add say the money dey with the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department and dem go move am to Bank of Ghana before dem go transfer am to Washington for onward payment to the university.

The Secretariat talk say dem dey committed to protect the academic and residential stability of Ghanaian students wey dey abroad. Dem dey work hard to clear the arrears in full.
