Ghana has extended its deepest condolences to the United States following the devastating floods that struck Central Texas on July 4th, 2025. The floods resulted in the tragic loss of over 100 lives and displaced thousands of residents, leaving communities in shock and mourning.
Former President John Dramani Mahama, in a formal condolence message addressed to the US President, expressed Ghana's heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families and the affected communities. The message highlights the solidarity between Ghana and the US during this difficult time.
Texas Floods: A National Tragedy
The torrential rains triggered the severe flooding, causing the Guadalupe River to swell rapidly. Kerr County was particularly hard hit, experiencing the highest number of fatalities. Among the victims were over two dozen children at Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp for girls. Other counties severely affected include Travis, Hays, Williamson, Kendall, Burnet, and Tom Green.
“Reports reaching us indicate that the disaster has claimed the lives of at least eighty (80) individuals, including children, displaced thousands, and caused extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. The communities of Travis, Hays, and Williamson appear to have been among the hardest hit,” the message stated.
Ghana Praises Rescue Efforts
The former President also lauded the tireless efforts of emergency responders, local authorities, and volunteers working tirelessly to rescue, relieve, and restore affected communities. “We commend your resolute leadership and the tireless efforts of emergency personnel, local authorities, and volunteers who are working under extremely difficult circumstances to rescue, relieve, and restore affected communities,” the message added.
The floods have been described as one of the deadliest in Texas history, prompting extensive search and rescue operations as authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage. Ghana stands in solidarity with the US, offering thoughts and prayers during this period of national mourning.
