Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy is appealing for calm and understanding as he continues to build the national team. This comes after Kenya's 0-0 draw with Chad in a recent international friendly played in Morocco. McCarthy, who took charge of the team with a two-year contract leading up to the 2027 AFCON, acknowledges the pressure to deliver results but insists that building a competitive squad takes time.
'Rome Wasn't Built in a Day'
McCarthy, a South African football legend, has faced criticism from some fans following the goalless stalemate against Chad. He defends his approach, emphasizing the importance of assessing players and building team chemistry. He highlights that the current friendly matches serve as crucial preparation for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN).
"I am trying to build the squad for CHAN, these are just preparation games, friendly games, that you try and see players that you have at your disposal," McCarthy stated. "Of course, I want to win, but if you don’t know a player, they haven’t played together, and they have only been here for a couple of days, then people expect them to win five, six zero, I think it is not possible."
Bridging the Gap: Local League to International Stage
McCarthy further explains the need for players to adjust to the demands of international football, transitioning from the Kenyan league to a higher level of competition. He stresses the importance of selecting the best players and fostering a cohesive team environment.
- The Harambee Stars drew 3-3 with Gambia in their first Group F fixture.
- They suffered a 2-1 defeat against Gabon at Nyayo Stadium.
- The recent 0-0 draw against Chad highlights the ongoing process of team development.
McCarthy's message is clear: building a successful national team requires patience, time, and a strategic approach to player development. Kenyans are urged to trust the process and support the Harambee Stars as they prepare for future challenges.
