Rayo Vallecano's historic first-ever Conference League game against Shkëndija came with some unexpected changes to their Vallecas home. UEFA regulations forced the club to shorten their already narrow pitch.
Known for its intimate atmosphere, with stands close to the touchline, Vallecas had to comply with UEFA rules requiring a minimum of three meters between the touchline and the stands. This meant Rayo had to shave off about three meters of width from the sides of the pitch. You could see it clearly as Rayo sprayed green over the old lines before painting fresh white ones.
The pitch width is now at the minimum 64 meters required for professional games.
Commemorative Banner Covered Up
Adding to the changes, Rayo was also forced to cover up their giant commemorative banner that read 'Always in our memory,' a tribute to the victims of the Covid-19 pandemic. UEFA's branding replaced the banner. The usual banner is expected to return for La Liga matches.
Concerns About Ultra Groups
There were some concerns about the visit of Shkëndija’s 'Ballistet' ultra group, who brought around 200 fans to Madrid. Thankfully, the game went off without any major issues.
Future visitors, Lech Poznan’s 'Terror Machine' supporters, are known for their far-right leanings. With Rayo fans equally known for their left-wing views, authorities are concerned about potential trouble in future European matches. During the Shkëndija game, Rayo's fans chanted songs that ended with the shout 'Fascists, get out of my neighborhood!'
