Ghana CJ Sacked: Prez Mahama Fires Gertrude Torkonoo

President John Mahama don sack Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo from office, effective immediately. Dis decision dey follow recommendations from a five-member committee wey investigate accusations of misconduct.

Why dem sack am?

Di committee find say Madam Torkonoo bin engage in "misconduct and stated misbehaviour," wey dey violate Article 146(1) of di Ghana constitution. Article 146(9) tok say di president must act on di committee’s recommendations afta dem investigate petitions against di Chief Justice and oda public officials.

Wetin be di allegations?

  • Accusations dey say she use public money sponsor her husband and daughter for vacation.
  • Dem also accuse her of trying to influence di former president to appoint five judges of her choice to di Supreme Court without following due process.
  • She also allegedly breach procurement processes for some contracts.

However, Madam Torkonoo bin deny all di allegations for a press conference on 25 June 2025. She even accuse di committee of abusing her rights during di investigation.
